Miam Miam's first-ever Singapore Soufflé Pancake in conjunction with the upcoming National Day has launched!

Adapted from their best-selling Original Soufflé Pancake, the batter is similarly made from scratch and the heart-shaped pancake is prepared à la minute.

I am head over heels in love with the national flag design on the fluffy pancake. Isn't it dainty? The texture is soft and spongy, not too sweet. A treat to share with your loved ones this national day.

Before I move on to the main dishes, I have to remind you guys that this pancake is only available from 21 July to 17 August 2014, and it's free-of-charge for any diner who comes dressed in red and white and orders any main course*!

*limited to one pancake per transaction

Miam Miam is a French-Japanese fine casual café kitchen, and in case you're wondering what sort of name this is, "miam" means yum in French. Yum Yum indeed.

I shall move right on to the main courses and let you decide for yourselves if it is worth a trip down to Miam Miam for this national day treat :)

Let's start off with appetisers shall we?

French Salad: $6.50

Absolutely delish. Just the right tanginess and cheese adds to the salt factor. Not to mention the yummy slices of duck seasoned with black pepper. Mix well and there you have with you an appetite-whetting dish.

Clam Chowder: $5.80

Being a clam lover, I loved the clam chowder. There are copious amounts of clams in there! Soup was also not too thick and overwhelming.

Minestrone Soup: $5.80

Well, if you order this together with the clam chowder, remember to drink this first!

Ice Matcha Latte with Matcha Softee: $8.80

People who know me will know I don't like matcha, so the picture above is obviously posed. Hahaha. Mag really liked it though, and she's a green tea lover. You can trust her on this ^^

Matcha Hot Chocolate: $7.80

I like sweet stuff, but even I think this is too sweet and milky. Best to steer clear if you don't want a huge dose of sugar rush.

Moving on to the main dishes!

Miam Miam Spaghetti: $15.80

One of the house specials. I liked how the runny egg yolk adds flavour to the overall taste of the noodles! There are also servings of sausages and bacon for meat lovers.

Chicken Teriyaki Spaghetti: $15.80

Loveeee this! Chicken being my favourite meat and teriyaki being well, teriyaki. Very appetising main course, not to be missed! There are even strips of seaweed with a dash of sesame to enhance the flavours.

Riz Au Curry: $15.50

After mixing it looks something like a baby's food, but don't let that trick you because it is actually really yummy.

Soufflé De Nuage: $15.50

Home-style fresh tomato sautéed rice topped with fluffy clouds of egg and cheese. I'm afraid I'm not really a fan of this because somehow the egg and cheese did not really mix well in my mouth :(

Croque Madame: $8.80

What an atas name, I like.
Do you know how the menu describes this dish?

"Behind every successful man, there is Madame, and she has an egg."

Hahahaha Miam Miam, you funny. But yes, egg wins. Bingo for this Madame.

Dessert time!

Vanilla Soufflé: $9.80

I think the National Day pancake is nicer, so get your asses down to try it right now.

Famous French Toast: $9.80

Ah yes, this. A piece of heaven. Might be better if it was ice-cream instead of whipped cream though.

And that concludes my night at Miam Miam! Launch was supposed to be the pancake, but I ended up having a little feast. Thank you Liqin for hosting and for the invite :)

If you're wondering why the pictures are slightly different from my usual angles, that's because a different photographer was in charge. Thank you Jem for the photos and editing!

How long has it been since you last watched or attended something artsy-fartsy in Singapore?

When have I....

Ah yes. I attended the Singin' In The Rain musical in Korea at Chungmuro Art Hall just slightly over a month ago! Sounds totally cultured right. The name of the theatre sounds like it originated from the Joseon era or something. Though don't quote me on that.

Anyway. Back to the local scene. I confess I do not have much artistic talent, especially painting and drawing, having garnered an impressive F9 in Art in secondary two and never looked back ever since.

Hence, I was a tad apprehensive when I was invited to the opening of an Ode to Art exhibition last Friday evening. To be honest, I was like "oh man art" when I first arrived at the location. I like art, but I don't think I can fully appreciate its value, simply because I am terrible at it.

Some background before we speed to the paintings: In light of the nation's upcoming birthday, five young artists from The Little Arts Academy came together to present this "Our People, Our Home" art exhibition. They are supported by Ode to Art Gallery and Business Times Budding Artists Fund (BT BAF).

Budding young artists. I applaud them for challenging societal norms of going in the direction of being a lawyer, doctor, dentist, blah blah, and instead heading to explore and expand the local cultural scene. Bravo!

Too many words, let's head on to the pictures.

Tan Wen Hao: Lost Time Memory

Fernandez Leong: Tradition

Kang Joosoon: Unrecognized

Jay Ho Ming Jie: Puppy Love

Charles Tan Chong Hui: Mooncake

(and yes I made them all pose for my pictures hehe)

Except the first boy; he was resolute in his stance that he does not know how to smile for pictures. I had to become the artistic one by taking his side profile then.

What do you guys think of these paintings? They all have a story behind them, which you can pretty much guess from their titles. (Mooncake though...... you don't say).

I really liked the first one, Lost Time Memory, because if you look closely, the lens of the camera shows a woman. Someone asked Wen Hao what it meant, and he said "oh, it's just my granddad taking photo of my grandma."

Cue the awwwwwwws. Sweet.

Y'know what's impressive? They're all in their teens still, except the girl. Mere sixteen year olds. What was I doing when I was sixteen?

Oh yes, failing my art.

You can view these paintings at the Ode to Art Platform at:

252, North Bridge Road
Raffles City Shopping Centre
Raffles Convention Centre 4th floor

They are available for sale too.

OH JUST GOT NEWS THAT ONE PIECE IS ALREADY SOLD. All proceeds to charity.

HI GUYS I'M BACK!

I know I've been away for quite some time and didn't blog. This has resulted in half-snide, half-joking comments such as:

"Gail you got blog uh!"
"You are a blogger uh?"
"You HAVE a blog??"

Some friends I have huh.

So to put things simply, I was having waaaay too much fun in Korea for my exchange, and hence the blog slipped my mind. /whispers/ I had places to visit and travel, school work to complete, and shopping to do. I had to make the best of my Korean dream, didn't I?

In any case, I'm back (have been for three weeks actually), and I'm back to blogging. Yes I shall be posting about Korea soon, when I get solid blocks of free time. Expect a long post for that :)

I am grateful to Brand Cellar for still remembering me as a blogger, and I received an invitation for a media tasting for Medzs two nights ago. This time, they're unveiling their latest Asian Kitchen to cater to our ever-changing but always rooted taste buds.

The latest addition to Medzs @ Millennia Walk offers popular dishes with Asian Flavours with prices that start at S$7.90. How affordable! No seriously, I think Macs is more expensive than this lor.

First up: Crispy Fish Skin with Superior Broth ($7.90)

Damn yummy. It's everything you imagine fried fish skin to be. The broth is pretty awesome too, though a tad salty if you eat it both together.
Verdict: 9/10

Next up: Braised Tiger Prawn with Superior Broth & Pumpkin and Golden Mantou ($18.90)

Tastes a lot like chilli crab to me. With salted egg yolk. Hahaha though it specifically says "pumpkin" in the ingredients.
Verdict: 10/10, must try. Ditto for the mantous.

Next up: Wok Fried Chilli Flower Crab with Golden Mantou ($23.90)

Not too bad. Might not be zichar standards, but good enough considering this is a Mediterranean restaurant. Only trouble is, I didn't eat the crabs too clean because y'know, atas setting and bloggers all around so cannot be unglam right.
Verdict: 7/10

Next up: Seafood Mee Goreng ($12.90)

Authentic taste of the mee goreng is there. Abit spicy though. Mussels and sotong are chewy and quite fresh.
Verdict: 8/10

Next up: Roasted Crispy Chicken ($9.80)

Meat inside was tender while skin was crispy. I thought it was pretty well seasoned too. Except I stupidly said "Wah taste like KFC" and got judged all round the table by resentful blogger eyes. Oh well, I suppose it's tons better than KFC then /grins.
Verdict: 7/10

Next up: Soy Braised Beef Brisket ($9.80)

Sorry, I know my photo turned out pretty badly. For some reason I couldn't quite capture a proper shot of this. The soupy broth was really nice and herbal-ly. Unfortunately, the general consensus of the beef was that it is an "acquired taste". The herb taste is pretty strong. Not for the faint-hearted. And definitely a no for non-beef lovers.
Verdict: 6/10

Next up: "Kampung Style" Seafood Fried Rice

Look at the ikan billis please. I loveeee ikan billis. And it's so crunchy and perfectly salted. Coupled with the fresh seafood, I think this is a yes.
Verdict: 9/10

And with that I conclude the dishes from the Asian Kitchen. Overall I think it is a good effort from Medzs, in trying to incorporate more styles from the East. Worth a visit, especially since the prices are so affordable too!

We had other dishes too, though they're not under Asian Kitchen.

Truffle fries. So addictive, I think can compete with PS Cafe.

What is dessert without rainbow cakes :) :)

Drink of the night: Strawberry Iced Tea. Refreshing, especially with the little bits of strawberries floating around.

Sunday, 26 January 2014

About 2 weeks ago, I was invited to The Audacious Cakery for a tasting session. As you can see from the pictures above, the cafe is a quaint one tucked away in one corner of Everton Park.

Let's move on to the cakes.

Tea is from TWG but a lot cheaper, so brownie points (pun intended) here.

Diabetic list includes:

Lemon Meringue Tart
Chocolate Souffle Tart
Zacharie (cheesecake with passionfruit center)
Strawberry Shortcake
Exotique (coconut cream, papaya and mango)
Chocolate Obsession (dark chocolate)
Salted Caramel Macaron
Lemon Macaron
Matcha cupcake
Irish Cream Cupcake
Lemon Raspberry Cupcake

If you still didn't notice my sombre tone by now, you ought to be drowned in lemon meringue.

The cakes looked way better than they tasted, and honestly the only two I liked from the list are the strawberry shortcake and the chocolate obsession. Quite frankly you can get just as good strawberry shortcake from I don't know, Four Leaves? I don't think I need to mention the gulf in prices too, do I? I must concede that the chocolate obsession redeemed this cafe a little because I don't normally like dark chocolate, but I liked this. The mixture is quite the blend of sweet and bitter. Rich.

Otherwise, the lemon meringue and lemon raspberry cupcake took its name quite literally because both Mag and I scrunched up our faces the moment we took a bite. It's too sour and lacking in the sweet tinge that definitely exists in successful meringues.

Macaroons are my absolute favourite and I was looking forward to trying the two flavours. Unfortunately, the "shell" broke and crumbled upon contact with the cake knife. The fillings were not fully filled, and as a result the distinct taste of the salted caramel did not come through. Quite a miss rather than a hit. You'll be better off buying the cheap but good macaroons from Bakerzin, really.

Oh well, consolation is that we took nice photos! Credits to Jon (who was really nice and efficient in serving us) and Nic!

Yup, I had to face this cheeky face for 2 hours. Hahaha #nightmare

Some mandatory bicycle shots because, well, it was this bike that brought mag and my hunt for this cake shop to an end.

Tried to take some artistic shots to show you guys how pretty the inside of this cafe is, so here are some candid shots of us playing with the props.

Also, Nic volunteered to be my photog for the day so you may check out his shots below. He says "got feel", please tell me if you can feel this "feel". Hahahaha

If you're around the area, I guess you can head down for some tea and maybe a slice of cake (one of those I recommended, for your own good).

Overall, I think the cakes are nice to look at, but my tastebuds don't feel the hype, so 6/10. Oh, my audacity.

G.
